Mikhail Blagosklonny was born in the year 1961. He is an oncologist who studies cancer and aging. Blagosklonny studied in the in First Pavlov State Medical University of St. Petersburg for both his master’s and doctorate in medicine. He specialized in experimental medicine and cardiology. In the year 2002, Mikhail Blagosklonny was appointed the associate professor of medicine at New York Medical College. Later on, he took the position of the senior scientist at Ordway research institute. In the year, 2009, Blagosklonny was appointed a professor in Oncology in Roswell Park Institute. Mikhail research interests include cancer and targeted cells therapy that can protect the normal cells from damage. Also, he studies the biology of aging.

Hypothesis on Aging

Mikhail Blagosklonny has formulated a hypothesis on the role of target of Rapamycin in the aging process. TOR may cause senescence in the cells. The TOR can convert quiescent cells into senescent without any damages of the existing molecular cells. TOR has contributed to aging among the mammals and in yeast. The pathway that leads to developmental growth among the individual members is associated with disease and aging. The overstimulation of the cell pathways may cause cell resistance leading to blockage of the pathways. The cells hyper-functioning coupled with cell resistance may lead to the death of the organism. He states that one main cause of aging is cell hyper-function. As such, the use of drugs such as the Rapamycin is a way of inhibiting the pro-aging agents and ensures one stays young for a long time. Mikhail Blagosklonny asserts that the damaging of the TOR pathway may lead to cancer and aging distinguished only by the molecular damage. In cancer, the damage of molecular cells leads to the production of oncogenes and deactivation of the tumor suppressors. The damaging of cells may occur due to the genetic mutation and epigenetic alterations. The activations of oncogenic pathways through the positive feedback loops may contribute to the development of cancer. Molecular damage is a key factor in the cancerous cells development.

The role of Mikhail in Roswell Park Institute is in the advancement of research in cancer and the development of new drugs to curb the effects of cancer. The discovery of the TOR causing both cancer and aging by Mikhail is significant for Roswell Park Institute. The drug development on cancer and aging will entail development of inhibitors to block various pathways prone to damage leading to cancer and aging among adults.
